Senate Votes against cloture on S-1639 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Simon

The hopes of ten million people were crushed on Thursday when the Senate, bending to the noise of the xenophobes on the right, failed to get the votes to move S-1639 forward. I had written on this site that it was unlikely that this legislation could pass the Senate and even less likely that it could get through the House but hope sprang eternal and I was as disappointed as anyone. Senate Vote 2. 15 Democrats voted against cloture and 11 Republicans voted for it. Both parties bear some of the blame for this failure. The Democrats did not step up and deliver the votes and the Republicans were cowardly about standing up to their right wing.

Some good can rise from this debacle. This show of misanthropy by the US Senate will perhaps make a few more people wonder why some people are allowed to tell others where they can and can’t live. It may take another twenty years but the tyranny of the ovarian lottery will end.
