The Cost Argument Defeated PDF Print E-mail
Written by Simon

The Heritage Foundation reported that the cost of amnesty would be several trillion dollars and the right said “I told you so.” Do this simple test to see how wrong that report is.

Without knowing any other facts which country is healthier; country one with a population that has an average age of 30 or country two with an average age of 50? Without immigration the US will be country two within a few decades. If we don’t allow a robust flow of young immigrants we will not have enough people to maintain the social welfare system.

Thanks to Ben Wattenberg and his book "Fewer" for the data for this argument.

Not convinced. Try this test: which neighborhood will flourish in the future? One with schools or one with senior citizen centers.

Why is the Heritage Foundation report flawed? The report takes a static look at the data. They don’t see that the low income immigrants they focus on will move up the income ladder and pay more taxes and they ignore the benefits of the immigrants children who will move even farther up the income ladder. And they were looking for facts that supported their bias.
