How much immigration should be allowed into the United States?

Yo Me Disculpo PDF Print E-mail

I want to personally apologize to all of the Mexican and other immigrants in the United States. What the US Senate failed to do in June was an act of selfishness that will reflect badly on this country for many generations.

"Yo me disculpo" means “I Apologize” in Spanish.

The Senate's anti-immigrant action, or more correctly inaction, was often couched in nationalistic terms. Ironically, the amnesty proposition was defeated because many people, descendents of immigrants themselves, now believe that we can’t afford to welcome any more immigrants. But they are wrong and I would like to apologize to all of you for their misguided beliefs and selfish actions.

The United States is not perfect. We have made some horrible mistakes in the past. Slavery, segregation and the Japanese-American internment in WW2 to name a few. Now we are making another horrible mistake now by slamming the door on the millions of good people, many of them you our neighbors, who want to come here and share our dreams. But no nation is perfect and that so many people are willing to risk all to move here and start anew is proof that with all its faults this really is the land of opportunity.

At Radical Immigration we believe that responsible people have a right to live wherever they choose in the world as long as they are not a burden on the people already living there. We know that most immigrants are not a burden and we welcome you. But many American citizens do not share our belief. They fear the new even as they try Thai food and insist that immigrants don’t contribute even while they use Google. They want to build a wall to keep people out even though a wall has never worked. They have convinced themselves that your act of civil disobedience (living and working in this great country in violation of what we believe is an illegal law) makes you a criminal.

So again I apologize. Don’t give up hope. There are many people of goodwill in the United States and change will happen. Slower than we would like but it will happen. In the meantime, stay here. You have a right to live wherever you want to in the world as long as you are not a burden. We will correct this injustice and you will have the right to become Americans.
