These Immigrants are Different
This is the objection of Pat Buchanan. In “State of Emergency” he writes; “Who are these people walking across our borders in the millions and forever changing the character of our country.” Pardon me but this is thinly disguised racist drivel. It is the same thing that Bostonians said about the Irish in 1870 and New Yorkers said about Jews in 1907. “These people” are freedom and opportunity seekers willing to leave their homelands to build lives in the freest country in the world. As long as our policies encourage acceptance of our culture how can this be a bad thing. In the words of Michelle Wucker, the author of “Lockout”, “they were wrong then and they are wrong now.”
